David Highmark founded HSM after spending 26 years with Northern Trust Bank. For nearly 2 decades, Highmark served as CEO of Northern Trust banks in Florida and Arizona. While working in Arizona, he established a Professional Athletes Division, which quietly became one of the nation’s largest providers of financial services to professional athletes. In 2011, Highmark left Northern Trust and founded Highmark Sports Management and in 2012, the company merged with FineMark National Bank & Trust.

David Highmark understands firsthand how quickly a career can end for a professional athlete. In 1973, Highmark, a Dartmouth College graduate, was drafted and signed by the Baltimore Orioles. A torn rotator cuff ended his career just one year later. This experience contributed to David’s conservative approach to managing the financial lives of professional athletes. For planning purposes he always assumes the athlete is in his/her last contract.

When Highmark’s baseball career ended, he went back to school and earned his MBA in Finance from Indiana University. Before entering the banking industry, Highmark joined Eli Lilly as a financial analyst and also worked for the University of Miami’s athletic department (1977-1980) as an associate director of finance.
